MURUGIAH: Ever Feel Like…

MURUGIAH invites you into his kaleidoscopic, sometimes macabre world of fantastical characters and scenes in the artist’s first ever solo show.

MURUGIAH’s work brings together experiences spanning the artist’s life, drawing on his Sri Lankan heritage and Welsh upbringing. See the influence of a youth trading Pokémon cards, watching X-Men and a lifelong love of movies in the works on show. Infused with candy-coated dreams and peppered with South Asian motifs, the work is wide-ranging, including sculpture, painting, prints and sketches.

“What I hope people will take home from this exhibition is that the themes and feelings I am presenting are being presented in a unique way. The themes however, are universal so I hope they come away feeling a sense of catharsis.”

MURUGIAH

Having trained as an architect, MURUGIAH has brought this skillset into his decade-long career as an Illustrator, alongside inspiration from artists such as Leonora Carrington. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with a diverse range of clients - designing a 1984 book cover for Faber & Faber, illustrating Compassion for Refugee week along with collaborations with Apple and Elton John, to name a few.

This begins a series of annual exhibitions at the Centre made in collaboration with contemporary UK-based illustrators, supporting ambitious illustration practice and incorporating new commissions.
