Queer and Now

Queer creators continue to energise and regenerate comics. They work across varied genres: romance, fantasy, horror, autobiography, political commentary, humour, non-fiction, poetry and beyond.

Creators have embraced the possibilities of digital media. Timely and topical comics posted on social media reach people in an instant. Scrolling webcomics are published directly by their creators with total independence. Their short comics and serialised epics have found dedicated audiences worldwide.

Print is alive too. At growing numbers of conventions and fairs, creators are presenting their comics and zines on their own terms. Queer graphic novels for young people are now some of the most widely-read books in the UK.

A global network of makers and readers are evolving queer comics into more transnational, diverse and daring forms. These are needed in troubled times. Battles won can be lost again and new oppressions threaten queer people’s lives. In response, comics can be a platform for speaking out and imagining better tomorrows. Queer people have always been here and always will be.
